A Shining Toonie That humbled Me
In the afternoon of last Sunday, May 26 2013, while I was preaching the good news and holding a signage with warnings, a homeless person who was picking those recycling bottles and cans from the garbage bin kept saying good words about me and my work. I thanked him and encouraged him to trust in the Lord and he will come to judge this world.
In a sudden, while I was still preaching to the passerby, he came to me and gave a shining toonie and said to me, " I give this to you and your church. Use it as you may need it." looking into his shining eyes with smiles on his not very clean face, my eyes were wet. I knew how important for him to have some money to buy sufficient and health food, and keep him warm with clothes from thrift store or salvation army store, yet he donated a hard begged or saved toonie to me, a full time worker, a man with a good family. His action shamed me and humbled me as I live better than his while observing him every time when I stand there. Indeed, I knew that he did not give it to me, but gave to the One whom he believes who sent me to do this good work. What a shining and bright spirit in this recycling bottles or cans picking homeless person. Most important, he knows the Lord Jesus Christ, our Lord. While he is suffering from this world and crushed by this world, when he heard the good news, and saw the good work, his heart and spirit were enlightened and shone forth. I saw through his smiling eyes that what has been kept deeply in his heart is the longing for the greatest Judge and Righteousness, the One and Only G-d.
While my heart was pumping by his pure love towards our Lord, I hardly could withhold this love and went to the other side of the street. I gave the toonie to one old begging lady, who appeared to be a Buddhist through past several months interaction and observation. She always bowed down on her knees to the passerby with her thin and already curved back. Pity and sorrow alaways mingle together in my heart. Does it matter? When the Love of G-d pulled out towards us, whether we are Buddhists, Muslims, or atheists? Our G-d loves us equally and everlasting. I knew that she needs some money to survive and could not make any earning at her age. I often prayed to G-d that his compassion triumphs over my judgement or knowledge; and His love triumphs over my anger and my sorrow. I shall help them unbiased whenever I can.
Thank You my Father in Heaven. Therefore, from little by little, day after day, you have shown me who will be in heaven with you. I shall commit to love you more with real actions like this homeless person, regardless whether I am rich or poor, healthy or sick, weak or strong. Let my core my spirit and my soul shine just like this man's, when your words and good news approached him. Are you not a righteous G-d? Are you not a merciful G-d? Do you judge people by appearance? Do you choose sleek and despite the weak? No. Father. You are the Righteous and merciful G-d. You love every one who are lost in this world. You love those poor in this world as well as poor in their spirit. Thank you for sending me on to the street to take this lesson and experience how your pure love can ignite even a tiny hope in a human heart. May you remember all of us who long for You and the coming of your Son Jesus Christ. May you always shine among us. Amen forever.
